It's always rewarding to come across kids being truly creative.

This past weekend, OpenSource, a fantastic little arts space in Brooklyn's South Slope held an old fashioned soap box car derby with racers the kids had made themselves out of recycled/salvaged materials. Led by artists Monika Wuhrer and Hubert Dobler When The Scrap Kins heard about this we jumped at the chance to donate our recycled stationery as prizes for the racers. This kind of creativity is what The Scrap Kins are all about. We approve big time!

It's official! Starting this fall, you'll find Scrap Kins pocket folders and spiral themebooks in Rite Aid stores. We're really excited to have our line of recycled paper stationery available nationwide. Our folders feature "Green Tips" on the back and our themebooks have recycled craft projects on the back cover! As you shop for school supplies this fall, go green with The Scrap Kins.

The 2009 "Scrap-Tivity" Tour Kicks Off!

The Scrap Kins are headed out on the road to teach kids their special brand of recycled creativity. To start the 2009 "Scrap-Tivity" Tour, The Scrap Kins will visit several schools in Los Angeles and NJ.

The tour kicked off on March 6th at Columbus Elementary in Lodi, NJ as part of "Read Across America Day." We read a preview of an upcoming Scrap Kins story to a lucky class of 5th Graders and held a workshop to make Scrap Kin bookmarks from used cereal boxes.

I felt like a real celebrity when several kids asked me to autograph the leftover cereal boxes. Thanks guys!

Digger's "Page Peeker" Bookmark

Project of the Month: Digger's "Page Peeker" Bookmark

Digger loves books. He reads them and then buries them in holes. It's kind of like his "dirt-library." In honor of "Read Across America Day" this month our Scrap Kin's recycled craft project is Digger's "Page-Peeker" Bookmark. All you need is a cereal box, scissors, a pencil, markers, crayons or paints and your creativity. You'll design your own Scrap Kin to "Peek" over the page and mark the place in your favorite book!

Spreading the Green Message

"Social Networking for Global Change"

The Scrap Kins like to network. On March 10th we we're invited to give our "2 Minute Pitch" at New York City's Green Drinks, a networking event for folks interested in environmental issues. There are Green Drinks held monthly in 456 cities worlwide. The NYC Chapter was started in 2002 by Margaret Lydecker, a long-time sustainability advisor.

Our point: Of all the wonderful "Green" initiatives being championed today there aren't too many aimed specifically at kids. Kids are the ones who will be dealing with our environmental successes in the future but more importantly our failures. If we can get them excited and interested in environmental issues at an early age perhaps we really can affect positive global change.

We recently stopped by to see our good friends at Still Hip in Brooklyn (they're a Scrap Kins endorsed kids used clothing and toy store) to get their help coloring our giant "Love" card.

The Scrap Kins recently made their ways into classrooms in Washington, DC and Berryville, VA. Using free downloadable recycled craft projects from Scrapkins.com, teachers Lisa Holley and Anne Sabatos-Young created lessons to teach their students about recycling. Way to go!

First Photos from The Scrap Kins Eco-Show!

We had a fantastic turnout for the premier of The Scrap Kins Eco-Fashion Show and Recycled Craft Jam this past week. The kids got creative with 4 craft projects--from stenciling tees, making tote bags from recycled jeans to designing masks from paper plates and creating hair clips from newspaper comics. Then we set our 10 Eco-fashion models on the catwalk to strut their stuff in Scrap Kins tees and handmade costumes built from recycled materials. We'll have more pics and video in the next couple of weeks but here are a few early shots of the day's creativity. Stay tuned soon for the date of our next show. - Brian

For all you New Yorkers, come celebrate with us! It's FREE Family Fun!

Re-cycle, Re-imagine & Re-create! The Scrap Kins are hosting a kid's recycled craft event and eco-fashion show on Monday, October 13th from 2-6 pm at Habana Outpost in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. October 13th is the Columbus Day holiday so schools are closed.

There will be 5 super-cool recycled craft projects to choose from. Bring your own tee-shirt (recycle!) to stencil, make a cereal box comic book, create a Halloween mask, design a tote-bag and make hair accessories. This is a great event for parents & kids. All projects will be supervised by art coordinators. Kids will take home their creations & a special gift from The Scrap Kins.

Eco-chic: Professional stylist, Candice Crawford will create fun & funky eco-hair styles and looks using organic make-up and styling products. Our kid models will strut their stuff in Scrap Kins fashion tees and handmade eco-accessories. The Fashion Show starts at 5 pm.
